More than 550 Metro Atlanta workers are set to lose their jobs as one of the nation’s largest alcohol distributors shuts down its Georgia operations following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
Republic National Distributing Company, commonly known as RNDC, plans to close two facilities in the Atlanta area and lay off 558 workers.
The affected locations are at 1 National Drive SW in Atlanta and 4300 Wildwood Parkway SE near Marietta. The layoffs are expected to begin October 19 or within the following two weeks, according to reporting by CBS News Atlanta.
A major Georgia exit
RNDC operates as a large wholesale distributor of wine and spirits, moving products from suppliers to restaurants, retailers and other licensed businesses.
The company said it explored financing and other alternatives but was unable to secure enough funding to continue its Georgia operations.
The bankruptcy and facility closures arrive as alcohol wholesalers face changing consumer behavior, pressure across the distribution business and broader shifts in the beverage market.
