Macon-Bibb County approved and dedicated portions of Cotton Avenue and Mulberry Street Lane as "Otis Redding Way", with the public ceremony scheduled for September 9, what would have been the soul legend's 85th birthday.
The dedication took place beside the Otis Redding Center for the Arts, putting the street designation next to an institution carrying his family's music-education legacy forward.
Why this location matters
The newly designated route sits in downtown Macon near the Otis Redding Center for the Arts and near places tied to Redding's life and work in the city.
Redding was born in Dawson, Georgia, and moved to Macon as a young child. His musical development became inseparable from the city.
He sang locally, attended Ballard Hudson High School and competed in talent shows at the historic Douglass Theatre before becoming one of soul music's defining voices.
