Atlanta beat the Houston Astros 4-2 on Sunday, completed a three-game sweep at Daikin Park and clinched the 2026 NL East title. The victory improved the Braves to 92-64 and gave the franchise its seventh division championship in nine seasons, according to Reuters.
The Braves had already secured a postseason berth on Friday. By Sunday afternoon, the question was no longer whether Atlanta would be playing in October. It was whether the division race would officially belong to Atlanta again.
One inning flipped the clincher
Houston carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning after Jose Altuve homered off Braves starter Martin Pérez.
Then Atlanta broke through.
Michael Harris II opened the sixth with a walk, Mauricio Dubón doubled and Ozzie Albies delivered the game-tying RBI single. Mike Yastrzemski followed with the swing that changed the afternoon, launching a three-run homer to right field for a 4-1 Braves lead.
Reuters reported that the 373-foot homer was Yastrzemski's 12th of the season and his first against a left-handed pitcher.
Atlanta swept a Houston team fighting for its own season
This was not a ceremonial September series.
Houston entered the weekend fighting for the American League West and a postseason spot. Atlanta took all three games anyway.
- Friday: Braves 6, Astros 2. Atlanta clinched a postseason berth.
- Saturday: Braves 6, Astros 3. Ronald Acuña Jr. broke the game open with a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning.
- Sunday: Braves 4, Astros 2. Yastrzemski's three-run homer supplied the decisive blow and Atlanta clinched the division.
The sweep left Houston at 77-79 while Atlanta flew home with a division championship already secured.
The bullpen finished what the offense started
Pérez worked through traffic early but departed after Houston loaded the bases with one out in the fifth.
Victor Mederos entered in a high-leverage spot and escaped without allowing another run, striking out Altuve before getting Yainer Diaz to ground into the final out of the inning.
Houston pulled within 4-2 on Diaz's eighth-inning homer, but Dylan Dodd struck out the side in the ninth to close the game and record his second save of the season.
Seven division titles in nine seasons
The Braves' latest NL East crown continues one of the most sustained runs of divisional success in baseball.
Atlanta has now won the East seven times in nine seasons. The club also reached the postseason for the eighth time during that nine-year span after clinching its playoff spot Friday night.
